Seals and origin

Quality seals at jaloom

This page explains which quality seals jaloom has and where you can see them. There are two, and neither is on every rug.

CARE & FAIR covers all rugs made in India. The seal isn't shown separately on the product yet, so you can tell from the country of manufacture. OEKO-TEX applies to a few rugs only. If a rug has the certificate, it's shown on its product page.

The CARE & FAIR quality seal and our rugs from India

CARE & FAIR is an initiative against illegal child labour in rug making. It campaigns for fair working conditions in the countries where handmade rugs come from. It also supports projects in the production regions, such as schools and healthcare.

At jaloom, this applies to every rug made in India. Rugs from other countries of origin aren't included.

The seal isn't shown separately on the product yet. You'll find the country of manufacture in the product details, though, so you can see whether a rug is covered.

OEKO-TEX Standard 100 is only on a few rugs

OEKO-TEX Standard 100 is a test mark for textiles that have been tested for harmful substances. The testing is independent and follows international criteria. The seal tells you about harmful substances in the material. It says nothing about workmanship or durability.

At jaloom, only a few rugs carry this certificate. If one does, it's shown on the product page. If you can't find a note there, please don't assume it has one. If in doubt, ask before you order.

How to judge quality without a seal

A seal is only part of the answer. The product page gives you details so you can compare rugs yourself.

Material on the product page

Every rug lists the pile material as a percentage, for example 100% wool or 80% jute, 20% cotton. For blends you can see exactly how much synthetic fibre there is, such as 70% wool, 30% polyester.

The details on the individual product always apply.

How it's made

The product page says how the rug was made. More than half of our rugs are handwoven, and we also have hand-tufted, hand-knotted, handloom and machine-woven rugs.

With handmade rugs, size and colour can vary slightly. If the difference goes beyond the tolerance, you have 30 days to return it.

The backing

The back is listed too. It's usually cotton, jute or wool. A few rugs have a polyester back, or a felt back with PVC dots. You can see this on the product before you order.

Recycled material

A few ranges are made from recycled material, such as recycled cotton or recycled PET. We don't show a separate seal for this.

Does every rug have a seal?

No. CARE & FAIR covers the rugs from India, and OEKO-TEX only a few rugs. All the others have no seal. For those, the details on material, construction and backing on the product page will help you.

Is CARE & FAIR shown on the rug too?

Not separately for now. The seal covers all rugs from India, and the country of manufacture is in the product details.

Where can I see whether a rug has OEKO-TEX?

On the rug's product page. If it has the certificate, it's shown there. If there's no note, don't assume it has one. Send us the rug's name via the contact page and we'll check.

Is there a seal for the recycled rugs?

No, we don't show a seal like that. The material is listed with a percentage on the product page, though.
