Cotton Rugs
Cotton lies flat, feels dry under bare feet and can be given a good shake in the garden in a minute. Every cotton rug we sell is a flat handwoven kilim. You can have it as a rectangle, as a round rug or as a runner. Part of the range is woven from 100% recycled cotton.
Flatweave in Daily Use
A kilim has no upright pile. Its threads are packed tightly together, so crumbs and dust sit on top and come up with one pass of the vacuum. Doors swing over it without catching. Chair legs don't snag either. If you want a rug that can go in the washing machine, our machine washable rugs have a page of their own.
Were you really after a short-pile rug? A flatweave cotton rug is still worth a look, since it sits even lower and stays smooth underfoot. For a coarser natural texture, compare it with our sisal rugs.
Several of the recycled kilims are classic cotton rag rugs with a slightly irregular surface. No two look quite the same.
Colour choice is broad. Pale beige and taupe make a small bedroom feel more open, and you will find more light neutrals among our beige rug designs. Yellow cheers up a dark hallway. Grey or black calms a pale wooden floor. There is even a white cotton runner.
Cotton Rug Sizes
Rectangles go from 60 x 110 cm up to 200 x 290 cm, and runners reach 500 cm in length. As a rough guide:
- 60 x 110 cm or 80 x 150 cm by the bed or at the patio door
- 120 x 170 cm to 160 x 230 cm beneath a coffee table, or in a child's room
- 200 x 250 cm or 200 x 290 cm beneath the sofa, with its front feet on the rug
- Cotton kilim runners for hallway and kitchen, from 60 x 180 cm up to 80 x 500 cm
We don't stock a large cotton rug in 200 x 300 cm. Our biggest rectangle measures 200 x 290 cm, which comes very close. Need that exact size? Browse our rugs in 200 x 300 cm.
You can get the recycled cotton kilims as runners too. The round cotton kilims are plain and sit nicely under a small table or in a nursery corner. Shapes without corners of any material? See our round rugs.
In the lounge, a rectangular kilim usually goes under the coffee table. It catches crumbs there and can be pulled out quickly for cleaning. Other materials for that room appear among our lounge rugs. Still undecided on the material? Start with all rugs.
Frequently asked questions
Does a flat rug like this slip on tiles?
On smooth floors an anti-slip underlay holds it in place. Under a hallway runner it really helps, because people walk over it all day.
How thick is it?
Very thin. It lies completely flat.
