Rug 200x250 cm
Five square metres, yet shorter than 200 x 290 cm. A 200 x 250 cm rug (about 6ft 7in x 8ft 2in) is wider than the familiar 160 x 230 cm, so it often fits where one would be too narrow and the other too long. Sixty-nine designs are made in this format, all of them rectangular.
Cotton and wool make up most of the range. Cotton arrives as very flat kilims, some woven from recycled cotton. The wool is handwoven, plain or patterned, with a fuller pile. Viscose and jute complete the picture, plus a few synthetics.
Colours spread widely. Beige and black lead. Red and grey follow, and the smaller groups take in orange and green as well as blue, yellow, brown and taupe.
Where does a rug 200 x 250 cm fit?
Under a double bed, laid crossways, it disappears beneath the lower two thirds of the mattress. With a bed 180 cm wide, 35 cm shows on each side. With 160 cm it is 45 cm, and the bedside tables stay clear. Wool feels warm underfoot first thing, and the wool rug collection shows the whole range.
In front of a three-seater up to about 230 cm wide, there is enough room lengthways for the front feet to stand on the rug. That ties sofa and coffee table together. Viscose has a slight sheen and is happier in a calm corner than in the main path. Other formats for a seating group are gathered under living room rug.
Beneath a dining table of 80 x 140 cm a 200 x 250 cm rug is big enough, and pushed-back chairs keep all four legs on it. Flat cotton kilims are practical there because crumbs vacuum straight off. Jute works too. It sits a little higher, though, and dislikes spilled soup.
When the sofa is bigger
Six chairs? That gets tight. With a longer table, lay a blanket down as a test, put the chairs on it and push them right back before you decide, because what looks generous on paper can feel cramped once everyone is seated.
Other sizes worth a look:
- A large corner sofa usually needs a 200 x 300 cm rug.
- Nearly square rooms suit a 200 x 200 cm rug.
- A round table standing centrally looks calmer on a round rug.
