Grey or brown? If you cannot decide, you often end up with taupe. The name is French for mole, and that is just what the shade looks like, a muted greyish brown. Depending on the light it reads cooler or warmer. That is why a taupe rug sits as comfortably on grey laminate as on yellowish oak, which in rented flats is often the real challenge.
Natural fibres in taupe
Every design in this colour is made from natural fibre:
- wool, handwoven, deep pile, as rectangles and round rugs
- pure jute with a short pile
- a sisal-look weave of jute with a fifth of cotton, short pile, rectangular, round or as a runner
- flat cotton kilims, partly from recycled cotton, also round and as runners
A taupe wool rug feels soft and muffles footsteps. You will find the same fibre in other shades under wool rugs. Jute and cotton lie flatter, so they suit a hallway or kitchen where doors have to swing over them.
Taupe with white, beige and brown
Under a light sofa the greyish brown grounds the room without feeling as heavy as dark brown. White furniture makes it look warmer, and matching pale shades are collected under white rug. For something a touch lighter, choose a beige rug. Prefer it earthier? Have a look at a brown rug.
Cushions in rust or orange bring in colour. Braver still is an orange rug in the next room. In a living room a taupe rug can take both, precisely because it is so restrained itself. For a cream and taupe rug scheme, keep the cushions pale and the wood light. Sofa and coffee table planning continues under living room rugs.
Sizes and shapes
Rectangles mainly come in 120 x 170 cm, 140 x 200 cm and 160 x 230 cm. Big rooms can take a large taupe rug of 240 x 340 cm or 300 x 400 cm. There is no 200 x 300 cm. The closest is 200 x 290 cm.
Round ones start at Ø 60 cm and stop at Ø 200 cm. A circle like that fits beside the bed or under a side table. Runners for hallway and kitchen go up to 80 x 400 cm.
Frequently asked questions
Ist Taupe eher grau oder eher braun?
Beides.
