Red Rugs
Red is the colour you notice first in any room. A red rug warms up a cool floor and pulls a large space together, and it works in classic and in plain interiors alike. Most red designs are wool. Synthetic fibre and cotton follow.
Red in Wool and Oriental Patterns
The classic choice is an oriental design in red. These traditional red rugs are hand-knotted from wool and carry fine Persian patterns that look good on wood and next to leather. So if Persian patterns in red are what you have in mind, start here. Calmer is the plain gabbeh style, with a pile you can really feel. Our wool rugs show the same qualities in other colours.
The types at a glance:
- Hand-knotted oriental rugs in wool, low pile, as rectangles and runners
- Handwoven gabbeh styles in wool with a fuller pile, also round
- Cotton kilims and rag rugs, very flat
- Jute mixed with a fifth of cotton in sisal look, short pile
- Red shaggy high pile in polyester, really deep
- A flat indoor and outdoor design made from recycled material
Where Red Feels at Home
Start with the living room, just before a grey or beige sofa. Red draws the eye there without you having to change anything on the walls. Red rugs for the living room reach 300 x 400 cm. Plenty for a large red rug under an entire sofa group, and our living room rugs have further sizes for the sofa corner.
Then the hallway. Red takes the severity out of a long, dark corridor and shows street dust less than cream. A runner rug in red comes in wool, cotton, the sisal-look blend or synthetic fibre.
Under the dining table, a round one up to 200 cm across works well.
Pairing Red with the Room
Strong red needs calm around it. Light walls and plain upholstery let it shine. Muted reds in a vintage style are easier to combine and suit modern furniture too. A red patterned rug also hides footprints better than a plain one.
Like it warmer and lighter? Look at an orange rug or a yellow rug. A pink rug is the gentler option.
Frequently asked questions
How soft is the gabbeh?
It has a full wool pile. You notice it straight away with bare feet.
Are there red rugs for outdoors?
Yes, an indoor and outdoor design made from recycled material. It can go on a balcony or patio.
Are the oriental rugs really made by hand?
Yes. They are hand-knotted from wool, according to the product details in India, and a few in Afghanistan.
Will red go with a grey sofa?
Very well. Grey calms the red down, and the rug becomes the clear focus of the seating area.
