Size guide

Finding the right rug size

The right rug size almost always follows from the furniture that stands on it. Sofa, table and bed set a measurement, and you just add a little.

Further down, you'll find a calculation with examples for each room. If you'd like to get a feel for the area first, start with masking tape.

Test the rug size with masking tape first

Tape out the size you want on the floor before you order. Leave the rectangle down for two or three days, walk across it and open the doors beside it. You'll soon notice whether the area works.

All measurements on this page are in centimetres.

In the living room, the sofa sets the size

The rug should be at least as wide as the sofa, ideally 15 to 20 cm wider on each side. The front feet of the sofa and armchairs sit on it, while the back ones can stay on the floor. Leave 30 to 60 cm clear along the wall.

Four examples show how this looks in practice.

Two-seater sofa 160 cm → 160 x 230 cm

In front of a 160 cm two-seater sofa, a rug of 160 x 230 cm is enough.

Three-seater sofa 220 cm → 200 x 300 cm

A three-seater sofa that is 220 cm wide needs 220 + 2 × 15 = 250 cm. A 200 x 300 cm rug gets you there, with the long side along the sofa.

Corner sofa 280 cm → 240 x 340 cm

With a 280 cm corner sofa you end up at 310 to 320 cm, so 240 x 340 cm. Allowing for the gaps to the walls, the room should be at least 3 x 4 m.

Modular sofa 360 cm → 300 x 400 cm

A modular sofa that is 360 cm wide goes well with a 300 x 400 cm rug.

Under a dining table, it's the chair that counts

When you get up, you push the chair back. Even then, the back legs of the chair should still be on the rug, otherwise it wobbles at the edge. So add 60 to 70 cm to the table's dimensions on each side.

Table 80 x 140 cm → 200 x 300 cm

A table measuring 80 x 140 cm needs at least 200 x 260 cm. That makes it 200 x 300 cm.

Table 90 x 160 cm → 240 x 340 cm

For 90 x 160 cm you need 210 x 280 cm, so 240 x 340 cm.

Round table Ø 80 cm → Ø 200 cm

A round table that is 80 cm across goes with a round rug of Ø 200 cm.

In the bedroom, your first step should land somewhere soft

Leave 50 to 60 cm of rug showing on both sides of the bed. In the morning you step onto the rug, not onto the cold floor.

Bed 140 cm → 240 x 340 cm

For a bed that is 140 cm wide, work out 140 + 2 × 50 = 240 cm. That points to 240 x 340 cm, with the 240 cm running across the bed.

Bed 180 cm → 200 x 300 cm

For a 180 cm bed it's 180 + 2 × 60 = 300 cm. So go for 200 x 300 cm, with the long side running across under the foot of the bed.

Two bedside rugs → 80 x 150 cm each

If you'd rather have separate bedside rugs, put an 80 x 150 cm rug on each side of the bed.

Runners for the hallway and kitchen

Most of our runners are 80 cm wide, in lengths from 200 to 600 cm. In a hallway, leave 10 to 20 cm of floor showing on each side. In a hallway that is 100 to 120 cm wide, that fits perfectly.

The length depends on the doors. Leave enough room in front of each one so it can swing open freely.

In the kitchen, the runner goes in front of the worktop, a little shorter than the run of units.

Hallway 100 to 120 cm wide → runner 80 cm wide

This leaves 10 to 20 cm of floor showing on each side. You set the length according to the doors.

Kitchen units 2.40 m → 80 x 200 cm

In front of a 2.40 m run of units, that means 80 x 200 cm.

Kids' rooms and small corners

Small spaces don't need a big rug. Under a desk chair or next to a child's bed, 120 x 170 cm is often enough. In a child's room, a round rug of Ø 160 cm also works well.

Round rugs and their diameter

Round rugs work in square rooms, under round tables and in corners that would otherwise stay empty. Which diameter you need depends on the furniture standing on it.

Reading armchair with side table → Ø 120 cm

With Ø 120 cm you have enough room for a reading armchair and its side table.

Child's room or small sofa → Ø 160 cm

Ø 160 cm works well in a child's room or in front of a small sofa.

Two armchairs with coffee table → Ø 200 cm

Ø 200 cm has space for two armchairs and a coffee table.

Large rooms, large round dining table → Ø 250 or Ø 300 cm

Ø 250 and Ø 300 cm fill large rooms or sit under a large round dining table.

Stuck between two sizes?

Then go for the bigger one.

How accurate are the dimensions on handmade rugs?

Handmade rugs come with a tolerance in size and colour. Allow a little leeway, especially where there's little room between the rug and the wall. If the difference is beyond the tolerance, you have 30 days to return it.

Do all the furniture legs need to be on the rug?

With a sofa, the front legs sit on the rug and the back legs can stay on the floor. At the dining table, the back legs of the chairs should still be on the rug when you pull them out.

How wide are the runners?

Most are 80 cm wide. Lengths range from 200 to 600 cm.

Smaller or bigger if I'm not sure?

Go bigger. Mark out the area with masking tape first and you'll see how much space is left in the room.

What if the rug turns out to be the wrong size?

You have 30 days to return it, even if you simply don't like it.

For very large or heavy rugs, a freight carrier can collect the rug on working days between 09:00 and 19:00. It needs to be packed, and someone should be at home.
