Colour is bought for the pattern. A colourful rug sets the palette for the whole room, and cushions, pictures and curtains can follow its lead. Ours come in two very different fibres. Handwoven wool, with its deep pile, is soft and warm, with simple patterns and strong colours, whereas machine-woven polypropylene with a short pile shows faded, washed-out colour fields and vacuums easily.
A colourful rug in the living room
Pick one or two colours from the pattern and repeat them in cushions or pictures. It looks intended. Does your colourful rug have blue in it? A blue throw on a grey sofa is enough. White walls, a grey sofa or wooden furniture act as the calm counterweight that lets the pattern do the talking without the room tipping over into chaos. Large multi coloured rugs up to 240 x 340 cm are fine, as long as the sofa stays plain. Our living room rugs show further ways to plan the seating area.
Next to a calm interior
Too much going on? Take a single colour from the pattern and choose it as a plain rug instead, which could be a green rug, a grey rug or, for more contrast, a black rug. Prefer something graphic? Then have a look at a striped rug.
Multicoloured wool rugs are woven by hand. Plain shades in that fibre sit among our wool rugs.
In the hallway
A patterned runner pulls the eye along the length of a corridor. You can get them in wool and in polypropylene, depending on the design up to 500 cm long. In a narrow passage with white walls one runner is often enough. Suddenly the hallway feels like part of the home and no longer like a mere thoroughfare between front door and kitchen.
On the balcony
For outdoors there is a flat polypropylene design. It comes as a rectangle, a runner and a round rug that suits a small balcony table. Chairs slide over it. Rain? Roll it up and bring it in.
Frequently asked questions
Which ones are handwoven?
The wool ones. The colourful vintage-look rugs in polypropylene are machine-woven.
Won't it all look too busy?
Not if everything else stays quiet. A plain sofa and pale walls absorb a lot of pattern, and one colour from the rug picked up in the cushions holds it together.
Are there colourful jute rugs?
No, there is no multicoloured jute at the moment.
