Equal sides, four right angles. A square rug fits wherever the furniture or the room itself forms a square, say under a square dining table or between two sofas of the same length. Sizes run from 60 x 60 cm to 300 x 300 cm.
Wool offers the most choice. Jute is available too, and so are soft high-pile designs in synthetic fibre. Colours go from beige and white to blue or pink, with black for a stronger contrast.
Which Material Suits a Square Rug?
The handwoven wool designs have a fuller pile and come in many colours. A square wool rug like this works well in a reading corner or under a coffee table.
The jute versions are flatter. Chairs glide more easily over such a low weave, so a square jute rug suits a dining area where people keep getting up and sitting down again. Jute is firm. It does feel a little rough, though.
Really soft is the deep shaggy pile in polyester. It belongs in front of the bed or the sofa, not under the dining table. A shorter high pile comes in polypropylene.
Sizes and Other Shapes
Under a table, the rug should extend about 60 cm on every side. An 80 x 80 cm table needs no more than 200 x 200 cm. From a table size of 100 x 100 cm, go for 250 x 250 cm so the chairs don't slip off the edge when pushed back.
The sizes at a glance:
- 60 x 60 cm up to 90 x 90 cm in front of an armchair, beside the bed or as a small square in the hall
- 120 x 120 cm to 160 x 160 cm for a reading corner or coffee table
- 200 x 200 cm under a small dining table
- 250 x 250 cm or 300 x 300 cm as a large square rug for a whole seating group
Under a round table, our 160 cm round rugs look more natural. In long, narrow rooms an oval rug is a softer alternative. With a big corner sofa, rectangular rugs for the living room often work better. Jute also comes as a round jute rug, and for balcony or patio there are round outdoor rugs.
Frequently asked questions
Do you have 140 x 140 cm?
No, we don't stock that size. The closest are 120 x 120 cm and 150 x 150 cm.
Will a small square slide around on tiles?
Small sizes wander more easily than large ones. An anti-slip underlay keeps them in place.
Can a jute rug go in the bathroom?
Better not. Jute can't cope with wet.
Does the wool one shed?
A little at first. After a few weeks and some rounds with the vacuum it eases off.
