A plain blue field with a slim border along the edge: that is the whole design, and it keeps this runner calm and easy to place. As a jute runner it suits a narrow strip of floor where you want colour without a busy pattern.

The surface is flat woven, so there is no pile to flatten or trap crumbs. It was woven by hand in India from 80% jute and 20% cotton, which gives it a sisal look. The weave feels firmer and rougher underfoot than wool. Jute is a plant fibre, grown mostly in India and Bangladesh, and it is renewable and biodegradable. Underneath is a felt backing with PVC nubs, which helps it grip the floor.

Because the runner is long and narrow, it works as a kitchen runner in front of the worktop, where you stand to prepare food and wash up. The same shape also suits a hall runner, and it brings the dry, natural texture of our jute rugs to a passage. It also comes in beige, brown, cream, grey and green if blue is not right for your room.

This runner is fine over underfloor heating. We'd leave it out of damp rooms, though, as jute absorbs moisture. It comes in several sizes, so measure the floor and use our advice on rug sizes before ordering.

Vacuum the blue runner on a low setting without the brush, following our care guide, and soak up spills at once with kitchen roll. Dried-on bits can be scraped off and vacuumed, and for a proper shake-out you can hang it over a banister. Keep it dry.
