Put a black Gabbeh under a white sofa and a glass coffee table, and the seating area suddenly has an outline. Black does the framing. Brass lamps and light linen look crisper on it, and this plain wool rug manages all that with a single colour.

• Pile 100% wool on a wool back
• Handwoven in India
• Low pile rug in plain black
• Rectangular
• Suits underfloor heating

On the loom, warp and weft lock together and give the black Gabbeh its structure. A rectangle like this lies well in front of a sofa, at the foot of a bed or under a dining table, so it serves as a dining room rug as easily as it fits among our living room rugs. Plain gabbeh rugs in other colours sit beside it in jaloom's wool rugs. Handwoven, it can vary slightly from its listed size, so measure with the size guide first.

Dents under table legs usually rise when you dampen the black wool lightly. Stray threads get trimmed with scissors, never pulled, as our care guide explains. Regular vacuuming takes care of the loose fibres from the first weeks.
