Pair this plain red Gabbeh with a cream linen sofa or a dark wood sideboard and the colour does the talking. Nothing else needs to compete. Against white bed linen it looks warm.

The red Gabbeh is 100% wool, a natural fibre shorn from sheep, and its back is wool too. It was woven by hand in India with a short pile, so this wool rug lies low and flat on the floor. Over underfloor heating it is happy as well.

A rectangle like this goes with a sofa, a bed or a dining table. Across the foot of a bed it gives the bedroom a strong block of colour, and among our bedroom rugs it is one of the bolder shades. Below a dining table, the flat weave makes chairs easier to pull back. Handwoven as it is, it can differ slightly from the listed size, so measure up with the size guide before choosing. Turn the red Gabbeh round now and then so the sun and the walkways spread evenly over it. Put it on an underlay slightly smaller than the rug, as the care guide suggests, and the corners will stay down. Every few months, beat it from the back and let it air.
