Soft sand tones and a flat, pile-free surface: this beige rug is woven from recycled PET yarn, the same plastic that is also used for drinks bottles. Once it has been turned into fibre, it behaves like polyester.

Being made of synthetic fibre, it suits a kitchen floor as well as a patio. Flatweave rugs like this one are also easy to live with, as crumbs and hairs lift off the surface instead of working their way in. The pale beige sits quietly under a dining table, and as a living room rug it makes a calm base for darker sofas. Looking after the beige weave

Spills sit on the fibre for a while, so you have time to blot them, then follow our cleaning advice and work on the beige mark with a little lightly soapy water. Keep hot pans well away, because heat is the only real problem here. A brush-head vacuum is fine on it, and a brush will lift any flattened patches.
