A bold pattern runs across this black flatweave, and because the surface is smooth rather than tufted, the design stays crisp and graphic. Black is a good choice for a kitchen rug too, since it keeps its depth in a busy room.

The yarn is 100% polyester spun from recycled PET, woven by hand in India onto a polyester backing. Like our other Synthetic Fibre Rugs, it is made to be used indoors or out, so it can sit under the garden furniture in summer and come back inside for the dining room. Laid in the living room, it works where you want pattern without bulk, and the flat weave is fine over underfloor heating. For the dining room, pick a rectangle large enough that the chairs still stand on it when pulled back; the Dining Room Rugs collection and our size guide help with the sums. Cream and grey versions are available too.

Spills stay on the fibre for a moment, which gives you time to blot. Then work over the spot with water and a drop of mild washing-up liquid and dab with clean water, as set out in our cleaning advice. Non-slip underlay a little smaller than the rug stops it creeping, and a quick vacuum keeps this one tidy.
