Soft and matt under the hand: this cotton rug in green is woven by hand in India on a loom, with no pile at all.

Like all our cotton rugs, the Kelim Chindi Uni starts with a fibre from the seed hairs of the cotton plant, and that fibre takes colour well, which is why the green looks so even. Crumbs and hair shake out easily. It can go in the washing machine, and it is fine over underfloor heating too. It sits well in front of a sofa in the living room, and beside the bed in the bedroom, once our sizing tips have helped you pick the size. Children's rooms see a lot of spills, so a rug you can wash is handy there, and it does the job as a kitchen rug as well. The same weave comes in white, beige, blue, brown, yellow and grey.

For small marks, dab with cold water and a little mild detergent, or wash the green Chindi on its own at 30 °C, then let it dry through. Slip a non-slip pad, cut slightly smaller than the rug, underneath so it stays put. Run the vacuum over it lightly now and then, then give it a shake outside.
