Description

Barefoot on a Sunday morning, coffee in hand, the first thing you see is a warm, sunny patch of orange. The Kelim Chindi Uni Orange is a flat-woven cotton rug, so there is no pile to sink into. What you get is a smooth, matt surface that feels soft underfoot and never scratches.

An orange Chindi for the washing machine

Not many rugs allow this, but this one does: the Kelim Chindi Uni in Orange can be washed at 30 °C. Spills in the kitchen or a muddy afternoon with the kids are less worrying as a result, which makes it a handy cotton rug for busy rooms. It sits happily in the living room, the bedroom, the children's room or in front of the kitchen worktop, and it is fine over underfloor heating. The same plain design comes in white, beige, blue, brown, yellow and grey if orange is too bold for you.

Cotton, woven on a hand loom in India

The surface of this rug is 100% cotton and the backing is cotton too. Cotton is a plant fibre taken from the seed hairs of the cotton plant, and it takes colour very well. The weavers in India use strips of fabric cut from textile offcuts and weave them on a hand loom, so the spread of colour falls a little differently with each rug. The ends are finished with fringes, and the rectangular shape works well beside a sofa or a bed. Handmade rugs can vary slightly from the stated measurements, so check the size guide before you choose. Laid in a lounge, the orange Chindi warms up a grey or cream scheme, much like our brighter living room rugs.

Looking after the orange Chindi

Small stains on the orange can be dabbed with cold water and a mild detergent, as our rug care tips recommend for cotton. Slip a rug pad, cut a little smaller than the rug, underneath: it stops the rug creeping on smooth floors and keeps the corners flat. Give it a light vacuum now and then, and shake it out outdoors.
