Green is an easy colour to live with, and this one leans towards leaf and moss rather than anything loud. Stripes run the length of the Kelim Chindi, and fringes finish the ends. It suits a kitchen with wooden worktops, or a child's bedroom that needs something calm on the floor.

Why the green stripes look slightly different on each piece

This green runner is flat-woven on a handloom in India. The weavers use strips of fabric cut from textile offcuts, so the spread of colour in the stripes shifts a little from one piece to the next. The surface is flat with no pile to flatten, which keeps it light enough to lift and shake out. Cotton runs all the way through: the pile is 100% recycled cotton and the backing is cotton too.

A kitchen runner that also works as a hall runner

Laid in front of the units, it makes a kitchen runner that is easy to move when you sweep. Along a narrow hall, the same length frames the walk from door to stairs. Leave a little bare floor in front of the door so that it can swing freely. Children's rooms suit it too, since a flat weave gives toys and small hands a steady surface. It is suitable for underfloor heating, which helps on a cold tiled kitchen floor. Mark the hall out with masking tape before you order and find the right fit for its length. The long green bands give the floor the same steady rhythm as our other striped rugs. The same weave also comes in beige, blue, brown, yellow and grey.

Keeping the green striped runner fresh

Dab spills from the edge inwards with a cloth, and let the cotton dry fully before anything stands on it. Turn it over now and then, and add a non-slip pad, a little smaller than the rug, to keep the light weave flat on smooth floors. A light vacuum now and then is all the green stripes need, just as our care guide suggests for flat-woven cotton.
