Stripes give a room direction. Laid lengthways, they make it look deeper. Turned across a narrow space, they push the walls apart, at least to the eye. So a striped rug does real work in a room instead of just lying there.
We have 27 striped designs at the moment, every one of them handwoven. Twenty are flat kilims of recycled cotton that lie very flat. The other seven are rustic jute stripe designs, four parts jute to one part cotton, with a coarser surface that feels closer to natural fibre.
Almost every stripe mixes several colours. Orange and green appear most often, followed by blue and brown. Taupe or beige in the pattern keep things calmer. For an even bolder mix of shades, have a look at our colourful rugs.
A striped rug in the living room
Line it up exactly parallel to the wall or to the front edge of the sofa, because with stripes every slight angle shows, far more than it ever would with an ornament or a floral design. Get that right and it works. In front of the sofa the lines bring movement into the seating area and still look calmer than a busy small pattern.
Sizes of 140 x 200 or 160 x 230 cm fit under a coffee table. If the sofa's front legs should rest on it as well, choose 200 x 250 or 200 x 290 cm. That size holds the whole seating group together visually. A grey striped rug suits a cool, pared-back lounge. Only two designs carry grey, though. Along the hallway
In a hall, a striped runner laid lengthways shows the way. Narrow corridors then look longer. Not everyone wants that. Stripes running across slow the eye down instead.
Our striped hall runners begin at 60 x 180 cm and reach 80 x 500 cm, with 75 x 200 and 75 x 240 cm in between plus lengths of 300, 350 and 400 cm for long passages and landings. The cotton kilim runner lies very flat, so most doors glide over it.
Beside the bed
A small 60 x 110 or 80 x 150 cm piece is enough here. First thing in the morning you notice the difference between the two materials. Cotton feels smoother on bare feet. Jute is rougher.
Care is simple for both. Vacuum flatweaves without a rotating brush so the threads at the edges stay in place, and blot a mark with a slightly damp cloth rather than rubbing it.
Next to a checked rug
Stripes and checks get on surprisingly well. One of the two patterns should stay quiet, and one colour should turn up in both. You will find good partners among our checkered rugs.

No. White isn't part of this selection, and black appears in just two designs.
