Rectangular Rugs
Sofa, bed, dining table, sideboard. Most furniture has straight edges, and rectangular rugs pick up exactly those lines. In our range the rectangle is by far the largest group, with sizes from 40 x 60 cm up to 300 x 400 cm.
Rectangle rugs under furniture
Under a seating group the sofa and armchairs should at least have their front legs on the rug. Most three-seaters need 160 x 230 cm, larger ones 200 x 290 cm. Beneath a double bed a rectangle rug should show clearly at both sides and at the foot end. Rectangular rugs for a living room get a whole guide of their own under living room rugs.
Long open rooms can take two rectangles of the same size, one behind the other. That separates dining area and sofa without building a wall. Keep both parallel to the wall at roughly the same distance. Laid at an angle, the zoning soon looks accidental.
How big should it be?
By the bed, at the front door
40 x 60 cm to 80 x 150 cm
Children's room, reading corner
120 x 170 cm, 140 x 200 cm
Sofa and armchairs
160 x 230 cm, 200 x 290 cm
Under a double bed
200 x 290 cm, 240 x 340 cm
Open-plan living
240 x 340 cm, 300 x 400 cm
You will see 120 x 170 cm and 160 x 230 cm most often. Small rectangle rugs are handy wherever a large one would be in the way.
Round table, straight edges?
A round table with a rectangular rug works, but a circle underneath looks softer. Try a 160cm round rug or a round jute rug. Under a long coffee table an oval rug rounds off the corners.
The shape works outdoors as well. A rectangle outdoor rug in synthetic fibre goes under the garden bench or lengthways on the balcony. A small corner with a bistro table is better served by a round outdoor rug.
Material and colour
Every material we carry comes in this shape. Synthetic makes up the biggest share, from flat weaves to deep shaggy pile. After that come handwoven wool with a fuller pile, very flat cotton kilims, jute and some viscose with a soft sheen. Beige, cream and grey lead the colour list. A grey rectangle rug is the easy choice next to white walls.
Frequently asked questions
Do you have really big ones?
Yes, up to 300 x 400 cm, and some designs also come in 200 x 300 cm. Leave a strip of floor all round, otherwise the room feels crowded.
What works in a children's room?
Usually 120 x 170 cm or 140 x 200 cm between bed and play corner. Building blocks stand steady on a flat kilim.
Rectangle or oval under a long coffee table?
Both are fine. An oval softens the corners, while a rectangle repeats the line of the sofa.
