Runner Rug 80x500 cm
Period hallways are often long. Five metres from the front door to the bathroom, with doors on both sides. A standard runner looks lost there, and two pieces laid end to end leave a ridge in the middle that somebody trips over sooner or later.
That is what an extra long runner rug of 80 x 500 cm (about 2ft 7in x 16ft 5in) is for. It runs in one piece from end to end. Around 70 designs come in this length, and many of them are also available at 450 cm. Cotton leads the range, followed by wool and extra long jute runners. Red and beige are the most common colours. Black is kinder to street dirt.
Doors and pile height
Measure the gap under every door that has to swing over the runner. Flat cotton kilims stay lowest. Jute, the sisal look and viscose have a short pile. Handwoven wool is the thickest, and in a flat with thin floors it noticeably softens footsteps for the neighbours below.
Five metres of rug also need to stay put. The sisal-look runner has a felt back with PVC nubs. Every other extra long floor runner wants an anti-slip underlay along its full length.
Extra long runner sizes
Leave about 20 cm of bare floor at each end. Then measure the hall and compare:
- 3.30 to 3.70 m free length: a runner rug 80x300
- 4.30 to 4.70 m: a long runner rug of 80 x 400 cm
- 4.80 to 5.20 m: 80 x 450 cm
- 5.40 to 5.80 m: the extra long hallway runner in 80 x 500 cm
- from 6.40 m: 80 x 600 cm
Shorter sizes for the entrance and landing are among our runner rugs. Next to the worktop a kitchen runner fits better.
