The name is a little misleading. Our sisal rugs have the typical look, with a firm, regular weave and a woven border, but according to our product data they are made of 80 % jute and 20 % cotton. That makes them slightly softer than real agave. They are still hard-wearing.
They come rectangular or round, and as runners, each shape in 13 colours. All 39 designs are handwoven with a short pile and have a felt back with PVC nubs. Every shape is sold in fixed sizes, made-to-measure isn't available.

A sisal look woven from jute and cotton
Real sisal comes from the leaves of the sisal agave and feels firm and rough. Jute is taken from the stalks of the jute plant and is softer to the touch. The blend borrows the look of one and the kinder feel of the other. So the product details say it plainly, 80 % jute, 20 % cotton.
Barefoot, you can still tell it is a natural fibre. If you would like something softer and even more natural, a jute rug in 100 % jute is the next step.
Where does a rug like this belong? Anywhere people walk a lot. The dense surface shows footprints less quickly than soft pile, and chairs glide easily over the short pile. In front of the sofa it creates a calm, natural area on which an armchair stands steady too. Our rugs for the living room show how large that area should be.
Which shape fits where?
Round suits round tables and soft furniture shapes. Rectangular brings order to a seating group. Runners belong wherever a space is narrow, so in the hall, in front of kitchen units or along the bed.
Searching for a 200 x 300 cm size? Take 200 x 290 cm, which is almost the same. Further large formats sit on our 200x300 rugs page. Under a dining table the rug should reach 60 to 70 cm beyond the table edge on each side, so a 90 x 160 cm table needs 240 x 340 cm. For a round table of 80 to 90 cm across, round sisal rugs of Ø 200 cm are right. Other materials in round shapes are among our round rugs.
Choose a sisal hall runner by the free length of your corridor. For a small entrance hall 70 x 200 cm is enough. Long corridors get one continuous sisal hallway runner of 80 x 500 cm. Looking for a sisal runner rug of 80 x 300 cm? You will end up at 75 x 300 cm. The length matches, it is just 5 cm narrower. In the bedroom a 70 x 200 cm runner lies nicely beside the bed.
On colour, beige and cream make a calm base, and taupe does much the same. Red or orange are far bolder, and green looks fresh among plenty of houseplants. Brown goes with dark floors, while black and grey look graphic in a modern lounge. More light designs are gathered under beige rugs.
Sisal rugs in everyday use
Keep them as dry as possible. Vacuum regularly with a smooth nozzle so the firm weave doesn't roughen. Mop up spills at once with a dry cloth and treat the spot only slightly damp. Then let it dry thoroughly. No soaking, no scrubbing, no steam cleaner.
Turn the rug round every few months. The path between door and sofa then wears evenly instead of leaving one lighter strip. Under a desk chair on castors a firm, low weave like this copes far better than deep pile, and a clear chair mat on top keeps it neat for longer.
On tiles and parquet the nubbed back keeps the rug where it is, so you usually won't need an extra underlay. Bathrooms and outdoor spaces are a different matter. Natural fibres cope badly with water, which is why the jute blend isn't meant for either.
Frequently asked questions
Is sisal scratchy?
Real agave is, more or less. Our blend of 80 % jute and 20 % cotton feels softer. For truly soft barefoot comfort, though, wool is the better choice.
Can it get wet?
Better not. Natural fibres can get water marks or ripples. Blot spills straight away and let the spot dry.
Sisal look or jute in the hallway?
The firm sisal look handles heavy foot traffic and shows marks less. Pure jute is softer but wears faster where lots of people walk.
Does the runner slip on tiles?
Hardly, since all three shapes have a felt back with PVC nubs.
Can I get a custom size?
No, each shape comes in fixed sizes. With 13 colours per shape there is still plenty to choose from.
