Bare feet notice it at once. A hand-tufted rug has a dense pile sheared to one even height, and it gives slightly as you step on it.
To make one, a hand-held tufting gun shoots yarn row by row into a tightly stretched backing fabric. The pile is then sheared level, and the back gets a coating so that no thread can work loose. It is quicker than knotting. The surface comes out very even. Our range has two families. Wool and soft microfibre, both as rectangles, circles and runners.
Two kinds of tufted rug
The choice comes down to fibre and pile height:
- Wool: 100 % wool with a short, firm pile. Melange shades of beige and grey hide crumbs well.
- Microfibre: 100 % polyester spun into a fine microfibre, with a fuller pile. Soft and smooth, in shades such as brown, cream and pink.
A tufted wool rug suits anyone after a natural fibre with a short, firm feel. If sheep's wool is your starting point, every wool rug in the shop, tufted or woven, sits in one collection.
The microfibre is twice as high and noticeably softer, the kind of pile you appreciate when you sit down on the floor with a book and lean back against the sofa. Beside the bed or in a reading corner that is lovely. Want it fluffier still? A shaggy rug has an even deeper pile. There are pink and green tufted rugs as well, plus blue and light grey.
Tufted, woven or knotted
Knotting ties each thread individually around the warp. It takes ages. The pattern shows on the back too. A woven rug is made on a loom where warp and weft cross, and our hand woven rug collection shows what that looks like up close.
You can recognise a hand-tufted rug by its coated underside, usually covered with fabric. Our sisal rugs feel completely different. They are made from 80 % jute and 20 % cotton and lie firm and flat. Reused fibres matter to you? Then a recycled rug is worth a look.
Sizes from Ø 80 cm to 200 x 290 cm
Rectangular sizes start at 60 x 90 cm and go up to 200 x 290 cm, so large tufted rugs for a full seating area are covered too. Runners measure from 60 x 180 cm to 80 x 300 cm. A tufted runner beside the bed is warm underfoot first thing in the morning, and you stop noticing cold tiles. When you choose one of our rugs for the living room, go a size bigger than your first guess.
Round versions come in Ø 80, 120, 150 and 200 cm. The small one suits an armchair. Under a round dining table you usually need the large one, and other diameters in different weaves are under round rug.
Dense pile and street dirt do not mix. In the entrance, a flat-woven design is easier to keep clean.
Looking after it is straightforward. Vacuum regularly, and on the microfibre use a smooth nozzle without a rotating brush. If a single tuft sticks up, trim it level with scissors. Never pull it, or you loosen the loops next to it. Dab stains from the outside in with a damp cloth. That is all.
Frequently asked questions
Is tufted the same as knotted?
No. Knotted rugs are made knot by knot. With tufting, the yarn is set into a backing fabric with a gun and fixed at the back.
Why is my new wool rug shedding?
Short bits of fibre from the shearing stay in the pile and work loose in the first weeks. With wool that is normal and not a fault. It gets less every time you vacuum.
Do both kinds come in a round shape?
Yes, from Ø 80 to Ø 200 cm, and as runners too.
Which one is softer?
The microfibre, with its fuller pile. The wool sits lower and feels firmer.
