A two-seater sofa, a coffee table in front, an armchair at the side. For that seating group a 170x240 rug is enough, because the front feet of the sofa still rest on it. That is a little over four square metres, about 5ft 7in by 7ft 10in.
Placing a 170x240 rug in the lounge
Lay it lengthways in front of the sofa, slightly wider than the seat. Leave 20 to 30 cm of floor to the wall so the room does not look smaller than it is. More ideas are on rugs for living room.
Across the foot of a double bed it still shows on both sides, so nobody steps onto cold boards when they get up in winter.
Three ways to dress it
- wool: Gabbeh Uni, handwoven in India in many colours
- jute: Nele, natural and firm underfoot
- pattern: Tabriz Mahi, knotted by hand from hand-spun wool
To make an oriental rug look current, keep the furniture around it plain and pick one colour from the pattern for cushions or curtains. The machine-woven vintage designs play with slightly faded colours. More wool designs are on our wool rugs page.
Other sizes around 170 x 240 cm
Ten centimetres less each way is the 160x230 rug. More generous is the rug 200x250. For a square table, the 200x200 rug, and for a second zone in an open-plan room, the 120x180 rug.
Frequently asked questions
Is it handmade?
Partly. Gabbeh and jute are handwoven, many oriental rugs hand-knotted, the vintage designs machine-woven.
Big enough for the dining table?
For a small table with four chairs, just. Beyond that, choose 200 x 250 cm or larger.
Does it slip on wooden floors?
At this size it is heavier, but on a smooth floor an underlay still helps.
Which colours does the Tabriz Mahi come in?
Cream, red and black.
