Buying guide

Just over 8 m² of floor. A rug in 240 x 340 cm (about 7ft 10in x 11ft 2in) carries a complete seating group or a dining table with all its chairs, so that every piece of furniture in that zone stands on it. Wool is the most common material in this size, followed by synthetic fibre, jute, cotton and viscose.

Around the sofa and two armchairs

This is the size for the moment two armchairs should also have their front feet on the rug. With anything smaller they slide off to the edge. The coffee table belongs completely on top. Half on, half off, and the surface looks cut in two. More ideas for the seating area are collected under living room rugs.

A 240 x 340 cm rug under the dining table

Here is how the maths works. With a table of 90 x 160 cm you get 75 to 90 cm of rug all round, so the chairs stay on it even when pushed back. That suits a table for six. With eight chairs you are better off with an extra large rug of 300 x 400 cm. Flat cotton kilims let chairs glide easily, while a round dining table usually looks calmer on a round rug.

In the bedroom

Laid crosswise under a 180 x 200 cm double bed, the rug shows about 80 cm on each side. Your first step lands on something warm. A wool rug with a fuller pile also muffles footsteps noticeably in a large room, and red, blue or a deep cream make the bedroom feel cosier than bare boards.

In a large open room

Plan at least 30 cm of floor between the edge of the rug and the wall. 40 to 50 cm looks better. That means a rug 240x340 fits rooms from about 3 x 4 m. Is your room smaller? Then look at the 200 x 300 cm rug. For very large spaces there is the 250 x 350 cm rug.

On 8 m² the rug sets the tone for the whole room. Cream and beige keep it light. Black or grey frame a pale sofa clearly, and patterned pieces or mid tones hide signs of daily life better than plain cream.

Frequently asked questions

Do you have this size for the patio?

No. Our indoor-outdoor rugs go up to 200 x 290 cm as rectangles.

Which ones lie completely flat?

The cotton kilims. Chairs glide on them easily under a dining table.
