Flour on the floor, a dropped spoon, a splash from the sink: this beige check is made for the spots in a house where everything lands at once. It is a hallway runner in a soft sandy colour, and the squares have a relaxed boho look that sits happily next to wooden units or tiled floors.

The pile is 100% polypropylene on a jute backing, machine-woven in Turkey on a Jacquard loom, so it is a synthetic fibre rug with a jute backing. That is why the check lines come out so crisp and the pattern stays even from one end of the runner to the other.

It is woven flat, which means no deep pile for crumbs to hide in and chair legs glide over it easily. Underfloor heating is fine with it. You can use it indoors as a kitchen runner in front of the worktop, or take it outside as an outdoor rug under the seating, so the furniture sits on it.

Other colours and shapes of this design are around too, including a round version, and as a long, flat runner rug it keeps a hall floor covered from one end to the other.

Polypropylene takes in almost no water, so a spill stays on top and gives you time to dab it up. A brush-head vacuum cleaner is fine on this short flat weave, and if the surface looks pressed down after a few weeks, a brush lifts it again.
