Rug 300x400 cm
Twelve square metres. A 300 x 400 cm rug (about 9ft 10in x 13ft 1in) takes in the entire seating group of a big living space, corner sofa, armchairs and coffee table included. No piece of furniture ends at the edge of a rug that is too small any more.
An extra large rug for the lounge
Allow around 50 cm of floor at every wall. The rug then belongs to the furniture. It no longer looks like fitted flooring. So measure the length and width of the room, take about a metre off each, and if at least 3 x 4 m remain the size fits, which in practice means a room of roughly 4 x 5 m.
Mark the area out with masking tape first. It really helps. You see if doors still open freely and where the furniture lands. Tight? Then a rug 240 x 340 cm or a 250 x 350 cm rug suits better. Extra large rugs for living room layouts of every kind, from corner sofas to two facing settees, turn up again among our living room rugs.
In a room with high ceilings
Wool is the most common material at this size. Some designs are handwoven with a fuller pile, others hand-knotted in a classic oriental style from hand-spun wool. A wool rug this big noticeably dampens footsteps. It tames the echo in tall rooms as well.
Under a long dining table
A flat-woven cotton kilim is easy to shift even in this format, and chairs glide on it. An extra large jute rug with a short pile brings texture instead. Viscose adds a soft sheen. Fluffy? Polyester high pile is available as well.
With a round seating group
Red leads in this size, followed by cream, beige and black. On so much floor the colour shapes the whole room. Pale shades keep it calm, an extra large grey rug stays neutral, and red or black set a clear centre of gravity. Is your seating group round? Then a large round rug of up to Ø 300 cm often looks better.
Frequently asked questions
Is there an extra large outdoor rug in 300 x 400 cm?
No. Our outdoor designs stop at 200 x 290 cm.
Two smaller rugs or one big one?
In open-plan rooms two can look good, for example to separate dining and sofa. For a single seating group one large rug looks calmer, because no edge runs through the middle of the furniture.
What is 300 x 400 cm in feet?
About 9ft 10in by 13ft 1in.
