Small Rugs and Bedside Rugs
At six in the morning the floor beside the bed is cold. A small rug fixes that with very little effort. Just over 260 designs are available here, all rectangular, from 40 x 60 to 90 x 160 cm. They range from flat kilims to thick shaggy pile.
Mat, bedside rug, little runner. Most people mean roughly the same size class with all three words. Where each size tends to go:
- 40 x 60 cm in front of a chest of drawers or by the front door
- 60 x 90 to 60 x 110 cm on one side of the bed or in front of the wardrobe
- 70 x 140 and 80 x 120 cm next to the bed or in front of an armchair
- 80 x 150 and 90 x 160 cm at the foot of a double bed, or in a reading or play corner
Small bedside rugs
Across the foot of the bed, a bedside rug should be about as long as the bed is wide. With a 160 cm bed that means 90 x 160 cm. At the sides, 60 x 90 to 70 x 140 cm is enough, depending on the gap to the wall. One size that works in both places is 80 x 150 cm, and every design in it sits on our 80x150 rugs page.
Two rugs left and right, or one across the foot? On a double bed, two matching ones look tidier. If it should reach under the bed, look at the larger formats among our bedroom rugs.
Small rugs for the bedroom tend to wander on parquet or tiles. A cut-to-size anti-slip underlay holds them in place and protects the floor at the same time. The sisal-look designs don't need one, because they have a felt back with PVC nubs.
Soft or flat
Pile feels nicer on bare feet. The tallest is a polyester shaggy with a deep pile, exactly the sort of small fluffy rug you sink into. A hand-tufted microfibre design and handwoven wool both have a fuller pile. Wool feels warm.
Flat-woven cotton kilims stay very flat, which makes them the better pick in front of a door that has to swing over them. Some are woven from recycled cotton and often end up as a small rag rug by the bed. More low designs are gathered among the flat weave rugs.
Jute is rougher. Pure jute comes in small formats too, and the sisal look mixes 80 % jute with 20 % cotton. For a small living room rug in front of an armchair, viscose with its silky sheen is another option.
Stains depend on the fibre. Wool and cotton cope with a damp cloth, dabbing from the outside in. Treat jute and viscose dry, as neither likes water.
By the sink a kitchen rug catches splashes, while along the worktop a kitchen runner fits better. Under a dining table these sizes are too tight. That is a job for a proper dining room rug.
Frequently asked questions
Are there small round rugs too?
Not in this selection, everything here is rectangular. Small round rugs of Ø 60 cm are among our round jute and cotton designs.
Can I shake out a bedside rug?
Yes, small sizes are easy to take outside. Vacuum afterwards, using the upholstery nozzle on shaggy pile.
