Diamonds, triangles, stripes and hexagons. A geometric rug brings order to a room without shouting. Many lines meet here, handwoven or machine-woven, some for indoors and some for the balcony too.
The designs
Kelim Durry is cotton, flat and handwoven in India, in yellow or grey and also in green. Phoenix and Harleen have oriental-style diamonds in vintage colours and are machine-woven in Turkey. Holly, in handwoven microfibre, has a raised pattern you feel underfoot. Deja works indoors and out. Eddy, with a long pile, carries a diamond design in a pale shade or in black.
A geometric rug for the room you have
Large shapes make a small room busy, so a narrow study suits a fine pattern. In a big lounge the diamonds can be bold. Lines running the length of a hall make it look longer. Laid across, they widen a long, narrow room, which helps in Victorian terraces with deep back rooms.
Before you buy, lay a sheet of paper with the pattern where the rug will go and look at it in the evening by lamplight. Patterns read differently once the sun has gone, and a bold diamond that seemed calm at noon can feel much louder under a single lamp.
Other routes
A flat kilim shakes out and moves easily, and there are more on our kilim rugs page. If you prefer bands, see striped rug. For the patio there are further outdoor rug designs, and lounge ideas are on rugs for living room.
